SEBI's framework for resolving securities market disputes
SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) launched the SmartODR portal to provide investors with a fast, cost-effective, and accessible mechanism to resolve disputes with listed companies, intermediaries, and market infrastructure institutions.
CORD was selected as an empanelled ODR institution under SmartODR to administer online conciliation and arbitration proceedings for disputes arising at NSE (National Stock Exchange) and NCDEX (National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange).
Eligible disputes include investor complaints against listed companies, brokers, depository participants, mutual funds, and other SEBI-registered intermediaries — where the complaint has not been resolved at the exchange or regulator level.
Who can use SmartODR?
Any investor who has an unresolved complaint against a SEBI-registered entity — including listed companies, brokers, depository participants, and mutual funds.
What disputes are covered?
Securities market disputes including non-receipt of dividends, share transfers, refunds, demat issues, trading account disputes, and mis-selling of financial products.
Is it free for investors?
The SmartODR process is investor-friendly and significantly lower in cost compared to traditional arbitration. SEBI has mandated minimal costs for investors at the conciliation stage.
How long does it take?
Conciliation proceedings are time-bound and typically concluded within 21 days of commencement. Arbitration proceedings follow thereafter if conciliation fails.
